About this School Project (*Kindergarten Jim Dine Hearts Collage)
Jim Dine is an artist that is known for his paintings, drawings and sculptures of hearts. His heart paintings have a lot of color and texture in them. He said he likes hearts in his artwork because, "I use it as a template for all my emotions. It's a landscape for everything...something very simple but builds to a a complicated structure."
To make their Jim Dine-inspired paintings, the Kindergarten artists first painted two papers, one using warm colors (pink, yellow and orange) and one using cool colors (blue, turquoise and purple.) They tried to leave some texture in their brushstrokes, just like Jim Dine. Once dry, I cut their cool paintings into strips that they used to make a frame for the artwork. They used the warm-colored painting to make hearts to collage onto their papers. They made the hearts by tracing them with a stencil and then cutting them out. Both tracing and cutting are challenging skills for Kindergarteners!
As a final flourish, they used their warm and cool painting scraps to add any other shapes they wanted for their paintings. Happy Valentine's Day!
