About this School Project (Rangoli)
The 2/3’s incorporated their India study into the art room by studying the traditional art of rangoli. The 2/3’s began by learning about the history of rangoli as well as how it is used. The students then watched a video of someone creating rangoli to get the full picture as to how Indian people use their hands to create these intricate designs on the ground using materials like rice or flour.
After viewing the video the students talked about their previous knowledge of symmetry. Generally when students use the word symmetrical they are referring to bilateral symmetry. For this unit the students learned about radial symmetry and compared it to bilateral symmetry.
Each student created their own individual rangoli design using a circle as the basic shape. Then the students learned how to do graphite transfers to ensure that their design was the same in each segment. Finally, the students worked together to create giant group rangoli designs using glue and colored sand.
