About this School Project (1st Grade Underwater Painting)
This project was so much fun! The first graders brainstormed as many ideas as they could to include in their underwater pictures. See if you can find sunken ships, treasure chests, mermaids, sharks, jellyfish and more!
After drawing lots of details, the first graders outlined and/or colored their details with oil pastels. The oil pastels add bright color and also have a practical purpose; the oil in the pastels help resist the water in the paint, resulting in a bright, clean paint effect.
We also discussed how to make different shades of blue. After studying the color wheel, the first graders discovered that mixing green with blue creates blue-green and mixing violet (purple) with blue results in blue-violet. Both colors are great tools to add depth and interest to otherwise plain blue water.
