About this School Project (1st - Clay Bird Sculptures)
Students in 1st grade art learned new clay sculpture techniques and vocabulary while creating these unique nested birds. Pinching was the key word for these sculptures. Nests for the birds were created from a pinch pot—a small piece of clay was pinched and turned evenly to create a nest that would not break. The birds were also created from one solid piece of clay using pinching, pulling, rolling and other hand-building techniques.
The birds were fired twice in the kiln: a bisque-firing to harden the clay and a glaze-firing to melt their colorful glaze choices and make their birds glossy and smooth.
