About this School Project (Paper Bag Building)
With this activity we were working to understand the learning objectives: We will learn that collaboration means to work together with each person contributing part to create a whole and We will learn that a constructed environment is a place created by people.
We began by looking at a google satellite map of our neighborhood and school. We talked about how the roads are laid out, the houses are placed near the street and where the sidewalks and street signs are placed. Then each table worked collaboratively to created the ground, streets, sidewalks and street signs for their constructed environment.
Next each child worked independently to create a paper bag sculpture of a house or building you might find in their community. We used marker to draw texture and surface material to the outside and construction paper scarps to add doors, windows and roofs to our buildings.
The final step was to work collaboratively to place their buildings in their constructed environment. The students really enjoyed the scale of this work and worked very well together. You can see our finished neighborhoods at:
