Artist Statement (what James19613 said about their artwork)
"It's like a mummy that goes around killing people (for pretend) and it reminds me of Halloween."
*Had a discussion about violence and how there is really no place for it in school. We discussed that violence is something we don't want to condone in real life, but sometimes see it in video games and movies, but those movies don't really improve our lives at all. We want to preach peace
About this School Project (Halloween from Newspaper - 2nd Grade (2015-2016))
One of the core arts standards for 2nd grade is to "repurpose objects to make something new." As this standard allows for the use of any material, I thought it wise to use something we have in abundance: newspaper. Students were asked to "make or build something with a Halloween theme". You'll see that many students took advantage of the Halloween-like images in the newspapers, but all students presented impressive, creative products (with artist statements).
After students had a chance to make their art pieces, we discussed them as a class and shared the artistic thought process.
