My struggles: "Last time I had the tail on the back and that little line on it and it was so hard to cut because I didn't know how to use the scissors."
About this School Project (Where Did Your Clothes Come From - 4th Grade (2015-2016))
So often, art projects are more about the product than the process. As an artist and an adult, I've had to push through the discomfort of working with new materials - When I was younger, I didn't tinker enough, I didn't test enough and I definitely have anxiety about failure. It's the one thing that stops us from creating. During this project, I wanted students to have the opportunity to TRY something without the fear of failure. In fact, failure and struggle were embedded into the learning targets; students had to record how many times they "failed" or made a mistake during one class period, followed by the solution to that problem. The fourth graders made me so proud during this project
Students and I read the book "Where Do My Clothes Come From" by Chris Butterworth and Lucia Gaggiotti, which inspired our materials: thread, needles, paper mache, felt, fabric, yarn, etc. Get the book here:
