About this School Project (Frescoes)
7th graders are studying Minoan frescoes in Social Studies class. They experienced making their own small frescoes by painting with watercolor paints on wet plaster, a new and unique experience. Students had a choice of subject matter inspiration: 1. typical Minoan fresco images, such as the dolphins and birds seen in that island environment, or 2. typical images seen in their own natural Vermont environment. Students were encouraged to stylize the images, as Minoans did. When the frescoes were dry, some students "antiqued" them, by intentionally dropping them on the floor so that they'd develop cracks. Because the plaster had been poured onto and seeped into burlap, the frescoes didn't break apart.
