About this School Project (Hong Bao)
Sixth-graders learned about the Chinese New Year celebration that began this year on February 10th. They were fascinated by the historical legends of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals and also about how the celebration and the importance of the color red came about. They looked at examples of real hong bao (red packets) which are given to the unmarried, mainly the children on the New Year's eve. Our packets a a bit larger than their Chinese counterparts because students learned to emboss with the Cuttlebug by using their choice of the four "Oriental Weave" folders for the front. They reviewed how to dry powder emboss when they printed an oriental rubber stamp with gold pigment ink. Black dye ink was used to print a red banner stamp and their choice of various Chines conchi (characters). There was also a bamboo shaped paper punch available to use if they wanted. Lastly, they cut out an even number (for good luck) of printed paper New Year coins to place in their packets, as the Chinese custom is to give monetary gifts in the packets. The students used many card making skills to create their hong bao so please leave them a comment about their works.
