About this School Project (Mitten, Mitten, Who's Got My Mitten)
Students had a great time designing their own colorful mittens using construction paper crayons. They folded their chosen color of paper then used their hand as a model to trace a mitten shape around. Two mittens resulted when they cut. They learned that to make a pair, these two mittens have to have the thumbs face toward each other, just like our hands, to be symmetrical. We discussed how designs are knit into mittens and also how designs are sometimes stitched onto them. Then the students became mitten designers, keeping in mind that the two mittens had to match symmetrically. I shared with them the Mother Goose nursery rhyme of the "three little kittens who lost their mittens and didn't know where to find them" while they worked. When done, each student "lost" a mitten (note to self: make sure that it's the same hand for each, like all lefts) into a basket. To add another twist, we talked about how we seem to loose one mitten (or glove) and can't find it, but we can make a new pair if we have another one that lost its match so these two together can make a mismatched set. I even showed them a mismatched pair I use at home! Students then enjoyed getting to randomly pick another mitten out of the basket to make their new mismatched pair of mittens. They especially enjoyed finding out whose it was originally! Please leave a comment on these fun, mismatched pairs of mittens.
