About this School Project (Fall Reflections)
This is always one of the students' (and my!) favorites that is my tweak from one my friend, "Mrs Picasso" showed me. We fold our paper in half lengthwise because most of it will be a print. The first step they learn is drawing deciduous trees without leaves with oil pastels. They then fold the paper and rub the back with a ruler to transfer the image to the other side, as a fainter image, in the water area. I refresh their memories on how to paint a wet-on-wet watercolor sky for the top and then the same process for the water. The next week, the fall tempera paint colors come out and I show them how to paint the shoreline in sections and print to transfer to the water reflection until the whole length is achieved. Next, the brown and green is mixed to paint the ground, again in sections and printed, until the whole length is done. Hills in the distance are painted with mixtures of green brown and yellow and printed as before. Lastly, sponges are used to dab red, yellow, brown, green and orange onto the tree branches to simulate the changing leaves' colors.
We hope you enjoy these colorful fall prints as much as they enjoyed making them, and please be sure to leave comments for the artists.
