About this School Project (Kachinas)
Fifth grade students learned about the Native American tradtion of creating Kachinas. A Kachina is one of the deified ancestral spirits believed among the Hopi and other Pueblo Indians to visit the pueblos, bringing rain, or good harvests, or other things the people need. Students created a Kachina to represent something unique about them. We combined many different materials to put these works together, including paper, feathers, buttons, beads, pipe cleaners, and tissue paper. We also learned numerous paper folding techniques to make 3-D pieces on our sculptures. It was really hard work because the finished Kachina had to be interesting to look at 'in the round,' meaning students added details to the front, sides, and back of the Kachina!
