About this School Project (Clare Smith Feathers)
Clare Smith is a local artist and hero of ours! She is the grandmother of one of our teachers here at Woodrow Wilson. Mrs. Tinkham is the granddaughter and go to for anything Clare Smith as any granddaughter would be for their grandmother.
Clare Smith grew up in Galesburg Illinois and was a great-grandma before she died. She went back to school in the 1960's after her husband passed. She was driven to get her degree in art after one of her grand kids told her she was good enough to be a real artist!
Clare traveled to Europe and met an artist named Stanley William Hayter. Hayter was the creator of a new type of printmaking and Clare wanted to learn from him. She was invited to stay and work with Hayter in France.
Clare began using feathers in her artwork while she was studying in France. She and her fellow classmates used to collect pigeon feathers as they walked the streets of Paris. Clare was curious and put a feather under her plate and put it through her press creating a print with the feathers imprint. She loved it!
She continued using feathers for a long time. She started referencing Native American culture and their scared thoughts of the eagle feather. She also wanted her viewers to see birds in a new way.
This is our attempt at creating a few feathers and patterns in printmaking.
So far we are loving this new kind of art: PRINTMAKING!!
