The painted sky looks cool because the black silhouette makes the colors prettier.
About this School Project (Silhouetting Aurora Borealis)
First grade students looked at pictures of and learned about the aurora borealis (northern lights). Using watercolors, they painted the aurora borealis sky. The next week they learned about silhouettes and skylines and how to draw the latter. When they glued the black silhouettes onto their painted skies, they were amazed at how the black enhanced the colors. Please encourage these artists b writing comments to them.
