About this School Project (Inspired by Africa)
After learning a little about the people, places and animals of Africa, we took inspiration from its patterns and textures. Kindergarten practiced pattern in a guided drawing of a tortoise, then added watercolor to our patterns (a first for many kinders!).
First/Second grades painted a textured background and glued on a torn-paper giraffe, drawn as a guided drawing.
Third through Sixth grades took inspiration from Kente cloth weavers in Ghana, noting the texture, pattern, movement and function of the woven cloth. Both classes painted a patterned paper for our warp threads. Third/Fourth wove in colored construction paper, and Fifth/Sixth wove in patterned ribbon. Our weavings were glued to black constuction paper to set off their bright colors!
