About this School Project (Kindergarten - Cherry Blossom Trees)
Kindergarten started their study on how Art is Everywhere in nature. We looked at images of cherry blossoms and talked about how soon the trees will be in bloom. Some trees will have just leaves and other trees actually grow blossoms on them. In Japan, cherry blossom trees are new starting to bloom. We also learned that Japan gave the United States a whole bunch of cherry blossom trees to be planted in Washington D.C. So, whenever they bloom it is a reminder of our friendship with Japan. For this project, students traced around their arm and hand for the tree trunk and branches. Students used brown paint to paint inside their arm/hand outline to add color for their trunk. While that dried, students used various shades of green and yellow oil pastels to draw the grass at the bottom of their picture. Next, students used blue chalk pastels to add color to the sky and they blended the colors with tissue paper. Finally, students used white and red paint to paint the delicate cherry blossoms on the branches. Students were careful not to make a mess and used simple dots to create the blossom shapes. We were all amazed at how the red and white paint naturally mixed to create the soft pinks of the cherry blossoms.
