About this School Project (Third Grade Visual Stories about our Summer)
Third grade students were given an interactive worksheet where they would draw certain lines or shapes based upon what the drawing prompt asked them about their summer or themselves. They had creative license to decide on the size and arrangement of the lines and shapes. For example, if they read three books they would draw three zig-zag lines somewhere on their paper. After students went through all of the prompts, they outlined all of their pencil lines with a black Sharpie marker. For the final step, students reviewed the benefits and drawbacks of crayons, colored pencils and markers which helped guide their decision making about which art medium(s) they wanted to use to add color to their artwork. They reviewed how crayons and colored pencils can create both a dark or a light value depending on the pressure you use when coloring with them. Markers on the other hand give you one solid value.
Students learned how art can tell a story even when it’s not a realistic picture. Their compositions of line, shapes and colors are abstract art that tells a secret story, but when you know the code, it’s easy to interpret the artwork’s meaning. As students created their artwork, it allowed opportunities for them to engage in conversation about their summer with both me and one another. I am excited to share their summer stories with the entire school and hope that you take some time to enjoy the beauty of their abstract art. Use the code to decipher what our students were up to t
