About this School Project (Kandinsky inspired abstract painting)
We began our painting unit by learning about the Indian artist S.H. Raza. We discerned abstract from realistic art and acknowledged Raza’s art as abstract (art that has shapes and colors but does not look like something from the real world). We spent the next three classes exploring how to mix the primary colors to make secondary colors. Once we were familiar with the painting routines of how to hold and clean our brushes as well as mix colors, we were ready to start these paintings.
We viewed work from Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky and noticed lots of lines, shapes and bright colors in his art. We learned how music inspired his art and how he wanted to translate sounds into colors, lines and shapes. We strengthened our line vocabulary with some videos and books and spent the first class painting out lines with the last two classes mixing lots of colors and touching up our black lines.
