About this School Project (Grade 5- “Amate” Paintings )
Students viewed actual examples of Amate bark paintings from Mexico which are a traditional and contemporary art form. The bark paper is made from the pulp of fig and mulberry trees by the Otomi Indians and then purchased by other villages where artists paint decorative, colorful artworks. Typical subjects are fanciful flowers, birds, animals, and scenes of village life. The background is usually not painted to display the textured handmade paper. Fifth graders created their own colorful compositions with acrylic paint and pressed fiber paper.
