About this School Project (3rd: Basquiat Creatures)
Students learned about Brooklyn Artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat and his wild expressionist style of painting. He painted pictures of skeletons, monsters, dinosaurs, and things he came up with in his head. He was really into science and anatomy, which is why bones and words related to anatomy were often present in his paintings. The first day students used two primary colors plus white to paint an action abstract background, mixing colors right on the paper without washing their brushes. Students were then challenged to paint in the style of basquiat and come up with their own creature using black paint and oil pastels on top. They added words, symbols, and details in their backgrounds and they all look amazing. Basquiat would be proud!
