About this School Project (3 - Elmer Collage)
Third grade students created these collages as part of a unit on the art of illustration. We read "Elmer" by David McKee for inspiration. After looking closely at the pictures in the book and discussing the artist's technique the classes were ready to create their own version of Elmer. Each student drew a background that included at least three unique trees or plants and a horizon line to separate the land from the sky. Their drawing was outlined with sharpie marker and colored carefully and completely with colored pencils and / or crayons. Liquid laundry starch was used to adhere colored tissue paper to a 9" x 12" paper which was cut to form Elmer. This was a multi-step project that required patience and creativity and third graders did a great job!
