About this School Project (Matisse Inspired Masterpieces (Goldfish 1911))
The second grade students were introduced to Henri Matisse, a French artist known for his collage with painted shapes. The students viewed his painting- The Goldfish. Afterward, the students painted large pieces of paper- one orange/yellow and the other blue/green. They waited one week for the pieces to dry then they drew goldfish on the orange/yellow paper and created a symmetrical fish tank on the blue/green paper. Students cut their shapes out, just as Matisse would have, and glues the pieces together. Next, the students created a room on a large piece of paper giving the illusion of depth. The room had a floor and 2 walls. The walls were colored and designed with Matisse's favorite shapes in mind. These pieces of art allowed the students to use many media (crayons, markers, tempera paint, scissors and glue) to make 1 final masterpiece.
