About this School Project (3rd Grade: Fantasy Cityscapes)
Our third grade artists worked so long and hard on these cityscapes and they turned out fantastic! We reviewed art elements, with a focus on space. They also looked at the art of John Behnke, who creates his own fantasy landscape and cityscape paintings, that often include interesting animals and creatures. Our artists started with the sky, exploring different times of day and using salt to create an interesting technique with watercolors. Then we looked at different cityscapes and skylines to create interesting buildings for our own background and middle ground skylines and detailed buildings for our foreground. Finally, we listened to the book "Call Me Gorgeous" by Giles Milton in order to inspire our fantastical creatures! Some artists decided to mix up different animals to create a new creature, like the book. Others decided on real animals in a gigantic size, while others chose to create a brand new creature of their own. They were encouraged to add details to their creatures and include different textures like scales, horns or fur.
These third grade artists had so much fun using their imaginations for this project! Make sure to check out all their details!
