About this School Project (6th Grade - Open Road Landscapes)
Students in 6th grade explored the artwork of Grant Haffner, whose images are inspired by and reflect the country roads, flat landscapes, and surrounding water that he would absorb while traveling. To create their own open road drawing, students learned to use one-point perspective to create depth in their drawing, and the illusion of looking down the road and into the distance. First, student drew a horizon line and selected a vanishing point. Next, diagonal lines were used to draw a road and the surrounding land. Utility poles and power lines were added as a nod to Haffner's signature motif, and students learned to use size and scale to increase further the sense of depth and distance in their drawing. Last, broad brush strokes and vivid watercolors were used to add color to their work.
