About this School Project (2nd Grade Sharing the Planet Monarch Artwork)
Second-grade students learned about the monarch butterfly's decreasing population. Monarchs will only lay their eggs on the milkweed plant, so it is necessary for milkweed to be prevalent anywhere the monarchs travel. The artists went through the design cycle to find a way to visually communicate about the monarchs's decreasing population and need for milkweed. Students empathized to understand the problem and defined what needed to be in their final artwork! Students were working toward the following Ohio Visual Art Benchmarks:
2.1CO Recognize and discuss the different ways in which art communicates ideas and serves many purposes
2.1CR Generate artmaking ideas from multiple sources
2.2CR Combine materials to explore personal artistic ideas
2.1PE Show perseverance in the creative process
2.2PE Apply increasing skill in the appropriate use of materials and tools
