About this School Project (2 - Kente Cloth Paper Weaving)
Second graders learned all about the art of creating cloth by weaving together colorful silk and cotton strips. This fabric is native to the Akan ethnic group in South Ghana, Africa. The fabric was traditionally used for garments worn by Ashanti royalty. The colors used in these weavings are chosen for their symbolic meanings. After viewing many examples of Kente cloth, students wove together paper strips and yarn to create these wall hangings. Sharpie marker was used to add patterns to the strips and fringe was cut into the bottom edge. Some students chose to weave yarn into their work to add texture. It took a little practice but most kids got the hang of the over-under pattern required to create a solid weave.
