About this School Project (Totem Poles 2nd)
Students had a history lesson about the west coast of USA. California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska all have Native American totem poles. The trees used were the western red cedar. We watched a short video about what Totem poles mean and why they were carved. For example if a bear was carved onto the pole it meant that the tribe had some spiritual connection with bears,so they were revered (and never eaten). The top of the totem pole was often hollowed out and many of the tribal elders ashes were kept there. Students then made their own Totem poles with recycled paper.
