About this School Project (JOIN OR DIE)
4th graders are learning about the American Revolution in their classrooms, and we are extending that learning into the art room! We analyzed the "Join, or Die" political cartoon that was made by Ben Franklin to persuade the colonists to unite against Great Britain. (It depicts a snake severed into pieces-each piece for each colony with the words "Join, or Die".) We learned how art can be used to send messages, ideas, and even persuade people.
4th grade "colonists" were tasked with making their own updated versions of the "Join, or Die" print. Their artist statement will be a letter to the publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette stating why their cartoon should be published and why it's important for the colonists to see their cartoon.
