About this School Project (Grade 5 - Celebration Cakes)
Our Celebration Cakes were inspired by the artist, Wayne Thiebaud (pronounced TEE-bow). He creates paintings of commonplace objects from everyday life. What makes his art so much fun is the fact that these are things we all know, such as cakes, pies, ice cream, hot dogs, and gumball machines. Students used ellipses (ovals) to create their cakes and make them look round. Then they learned how to make it look like there is a slice cut out of the cake. To begin students drew their cake in pencil on grey drawing paper. Students used Oil Pastels to draw and add color to the cakes. Students also learned about light & shadow - look carefully and you will see highlights, shadows, and cast shadows in the cake drawings! They look good enough to EAT - enjoy! Our young artists LOVE to get compliments on their work -- please leave a comment for an artist you know! Then become a member of their FAN CLUB, that way you will get updates as soon as they have new artwork published!
