About this School Project (Todd Parr Portraits)
Kindergarten students watched a read aloud book to music by Todd Parr. We talked about the images we saw and his use of bold black line. His images are also characterized by non-realistic colors, for example....purple skin or a green dog. For our project, we created portraits (self-portrait or a portrait of someone else). We learned how to use a new material which is an ink dauber. Instead of using it to dot with as most students were used to doing, we drew with it. Students learned how to use shapes for body parts and different way to draw faces and hair in the same style as the artist. We had to hold it so it was straight up and down so the dauber made a thick line. WOW, it dries SO fast and it's also permanent. This allowed us to color it pretty quickly after. After we were done drawing with the ink dauber, we used paint sticks to color it in. We were encouraged to switch colors every time we switched sections and it's also ok to repeat colors! These came out wonderful! Great work Kinder artists!
