About this School Project (2nd: Tanner Lions)
Inspired by artist Henry O. Tanner who grew up in Philadelphia and painted famous pictures of the lions at the Philadelphia Zoo while attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, which is now a Museum in Philly you can visit and see his paintings! Henry Tanner was the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim and praise!
Students studied the lions facial features and fur colors to make their lions look realistic! After we drew our lions and created distinct markings on the faces to make them all look different, we painting them with multiple shades of tan and brown watercolor for the base coat. Lastly, we added chalk pastel lines to the lion’s mane and used a rubbing technique to add shadows and value in the nose and face to make him look realistic and come to life!
