About this School Project (1st grade Winter Kitties — Art with Ms. Cohen)
In art class, 1st grade students explored illustration techniques inspired by the whimsical work artist, Angie Rozelaar. They created a playful winter cat illustration, learning how to break down complex images into simple shapes to make drawing more approachable. Using new bingo daubers, students outlined their kitties with bold, clean lines, giving their artwork a striking foundation.
We focused on adding personality and texture to the kitty’s scarf by discussing line direction and patterns. Students then learned proper watercolor techniques to bring their illustrations to life, blending and layering colors to add depth and vibrancy. For those who wanted to enhance their artwork further, paint sticks were available to create a colorful background. This lesson not only introduced students to new materials, but also encouraged them to think creatively and approach drawing step by step, building their confidence in illustration. Inspired by Rozelaar’s charming style, the students’ artwork truly captured a playful winter spirit!
