About this School Project (Snowmen at Night)
The first grade read the story Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. Students discussed how the illustrator made the snowmen look as if they were glowing in the night. Students noticed that the artist used colors other than just white to give the snowmen value, or a change in color.
For their project, the students drew a snowman inspired by the snowmen in Snowmen at Night. Students used white oil pastel to create a snowy ground and drew three dark white circles for the snowman body. Students practiced shading the top and bottom of each circle using warm and cool colors to create value and glow. They added a shadow beneath the snowman and a tree and house in the background. Last they added white tempera paint to create the snowflakes.
