About this School Project (Fourth Grade Tints and Shades Tree Paintings)
Students learned how to create tints with paint by adding white to a paint color and how to create shades by adding black to a paint color. After practicing mixing tints and shades, students created a night sky by painting a white moon and then painting concentric circles around the moon with tints ranging from lightest blue to pure blue. They continued painting concentric rings reaching to the bottom of their paper using shades ranging from dark blue to darker blue and finally to black. For the second part of this project, students observed trees and noticed how the branches get thinner and shorter as they grow up. They also noticed how the branches form the letter Y as they grow. Students practiced drawing and then painting trees with black paint. Once they gained confidence, they drew a tree onto their night sky background and then painted it with black paint. This was a good opportunity for them to practice brush control and how to make the branches thin on the end by gradually letting off the pressure they applied to the brush. Finally, students learned about highlights and shadows and how to determine where they occur depending on the light source. Using white colored pencil, students added highlights from the moon shining onto their tree branches to help give their trees the illusion of being three dimensional.
