About this School Project (Sketchbook Work)
Our 1st Graders are learning how to upload artwork to Artsonia. This is a platform for students to not only share their artwork, but to communicate what they were drawing and why.
In Art, we compare this to riding a bike; at first it takes a little longer, we are a little wobbly, but over time we get much faster and better at it.
During Open Studio, our artists are given the freedom to experiment with materials around the room and/or draw in their sketchbooks. I find most of them choose to draw at first as they are rarely given the opportunity to just be free with their ideas.
In 1st grade we talk about titling our artwork, which gives us insight into their thinking. Sometimes it is just for fun (which is more than ok), but it often also gives us (the observers) a window into a students feelings, likes or dislikes, interests, experiences, and much more. We get to know them on a deeper level as artists.
As the students improve and grow, they will be asked to give artist statements; usually in 2nd grade, but sometimes earlier depending on the artists.
