About this School Project (Winter Tree Farm)
Part of the curriculum in 1st grade is learning and understanding our great state of North Carolina. We brought that into the art room and included knowledge of one of the main sources of income of the Western part of state, Christmas Trees! We extended our learning of one point perspective in creating a Christmas tree farm that demonstrates the element of space. Students were given tutorials and examples of trees to complete. We discussed size, overlapping and repetition of shapes, to complete the rows of trees at the farm, and showing how the change of size of the trees towards the vanishing point helps to represent the illusion of space/distance on a flat piece of paper.
For this work we completed the color portion with both oil pastels and watercolor. In order to capture the winter season, students applied white oil pastel somewhat heavily to the tops of their trees and to the grass between the trees. Watercolor was then applied to the trees and ground, resisting the oil pastel. The last area of the picture, the sky, was a study and attempt to blend watercolors, from blue to purple, creating a transition, and essentially new color between the two applied. After watercolor was applied, salt was sprinkled in this area to demonstrate how it can absorb the paint and create snow like effects on the paper.
