About this School Project (Spooky Portrait/Self Portrait)
Students began with a VALUE shading worksheet to practice creating a RANGE OF VALUES using the techniques of PRESSURE and LAYERING with #2 and black colored pencils.
Prior knowledge of TIM BURTON was discussed, including his body of work and art style. This was followed by a brief video introduction.
Next, students began their artwork by drawing a FRAME around the outside edge of gray paper, followed by a PORTRAIT/SELF-PORTRAIT using elements indicative of Tim Burton's art style: large heads; big, round eyes; small noses and mouths; long necks, etc. They were encouraged to include elements like spiders and webs, bats, or other "spooky" details.
Once completed in pencil, students outlined their drawings with Sharpie marker and began creating shadow and light using #2 pencil, and black and white colored pencil. The gray paper acts as the middle value within the range.
Examples were shown of common areas of facial shading: under the chin, around the nose, etc.
