About this School Project (2nd Grade - Bird's Eye View Snowmen)
Second graders began the next unit of study, Art Expresses a Point of View, by learning about different ways to look at things and how to record what they see. We discussed how we normally draw a front view of a snowman, and maybe even a side view. What about a bird's eye view (or aerial perspective)? First, students used a variety of watercolor painting techniques to create a wintery background. While the watercolor background was drying we worked on the snowman. After some thinking and experimenting, second graders noticed we might see the snowballs stacked. Students used three different sized circle templates to trance the shape of each snowman piece onto construction paper. To give our snowmen some extra depth, we added a chalk pastel ring on the outside of the snowballs, and learned how to smudge to make a shadow. Students cut these out and pasted them to their wintery watercolor background paper. After constructing our little snowmen, the best part was watching all the extra details everyone created using Sharpies and extra construction paper scraps.
