About this School Project (Free Create)
Free create(TAB) typically happens near the end of a lesson or art project when we have a "catch up day"; a day for students who were absent, or work slower, to finish their artworks. Students are learning how artists make art, what it means to be an artist, & encouraged to complete their artworks, take their time, do their best work, & "dress up their mess up", rather than becoming upset about mistakes. TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) places the choice of what is made in the hands of the student, rather than of the teacher. The teacher facilitates ideas by teaching students about different art materials, how to use them appropriately, famous artists, art techniques, & the Studio Habits of Mind (the things artists do to create art). Students have the choice to make their own creations, using their own ideas. Students can use any of the art supplies we have out & available. When viewing free create(TAB) art, I encourage adults to remember these students range in age from 5 to 8, & their artworks should look typical of that age range. Artworks should not look "perfect" at this age.
