About this School Project (5 Cochiti Pueblo Stoytellers)
We looked at the work of Cochiti Pueblo ceramicist Helen Cordero for inspiration for this clay project. She made these clay figures to honor her grandfather, who was a great storyteller. Sculptures are traditionally surrounded with children, and have their mouths open to show they are telling stories. We stayed with the traditional Cochiti colors: terra cotta (red clay), black and white, and added patterns with sharpie and white charcoal pencils. Authentic Pueblo storytellers can be found in the Santa Fe area of New Mexico.
