About this School Project (5th Grade Pumpkin Still Life)
Students in fifth grade created a pumpkin still life. Students examined several still-life examples from a variety of artists. A still life is a drawing or painting of inanimate objects and helps build the skill of observation to paint or draw what the artist can see. The practice of creating a still life goes back several centuries and is one of the oldest artistic traditions still practiced today.
There are several reasons why an artist might create a still life:
-To practice the skill of observation and create a connection between what the eye sees and what the artist can convey
-To practice a new technique or medium, for technical experience
-To convey a message
-To present and depict objects in an interesting or novel way
-To practice effective composition
Students drew pumpkins using pencils and then applied soft pastels. Students were given a demonstration on mixing tints and shades using pastels to convey a range of values to show highlights and shadows. Lastly, students selected a single color to add to their background.
