"Cultural Identity Plaster Mask"

Artist Statement (what Louis3644 said about their artwork)
I used plaster and acrylic paint to make a plaster mask in my artwork. My artwork focused on my culture and my identity. This piece connects to me personally because of symbols like pencil and food. My piece also expresses my culture through things like the flag of Vietnam on the top left of my flag and a bowl of pho. I chose to use a lot of symbols in my artwork to show my culture and my values and fill in the white space that I have.
To create this piece, I started by making a coggle mind map about me and interviewed my dad. After that, I brainstormed ideas for my mask and then I started working on my mask. I started by putting plaster on a plastic wrapped mask, letting it dry and then I put more plaster on the brittle spots. Then I started marking where I would paint things in pencil and started painting. After painting, I realized that my blue section which was about family looked very boring so I repainted it but this time I used Keith Haring’s style and it turned out great. I also decided to add more symbols to fill in the white space.

The final art challenge for grade 8 is to create an artwork that connects to their personal and cultural identity, incorporates elements from the artist connections, and takes the techniques learned in the skill builders to a higher, more creative level. They have the freedom to mix and match, bringing together elements from the Expressionist portraits, mask-making, digital collages, or sketchbook prompts.
