About this School Project (Seurat Painting)
Seurat is known for his technique of pointillism, which is a visual blending and mixing of colors on the canvas with the use of small dots. Students worked in the style of Seurat by recreating 'The River Seine at La Grande-Jatte,' from 1888 using Q-tips and only the primary colors. In this lesson, students learned the value of colors and the importance of beginning with lighter valued colors as the base to mix new colors. They also discovered that in the combination of all primary colors, muddy browns are created, and hence the brown for the tree. Lastly, the concept of texture was introduced, as we compared and contrasted the style of Seurat to that of VanGogh's line work, which was viewed in the completion of the Lion Color Wheel.
