About this School Project (1st grade Elements of Art Cakes Inspired by Wayne Thiebaud)
First-grade students started the year focusing on the IB PYP theme of How We Organize Ourselves. They identified how their actions in the art room could impact other students since the whole school shares the art room space and materials. Students collaboratively identified Essential Agreements that will help everyone enjoy art while being safe, responsible, and respectful. Students looked at Wayne Thiebaud’s Cakes (1963) and identified the types of lines they would need to draw a cake. 1st grade artists reviewed that line, one of Elements of Art and Design, is how an artist can start making any drawing! The Elements of Art are the ingredients that are in every single work of art. They used those “ingredients” to create cakes with varied lines, shapes, and colors. Students were working toward the following Ohio Visual Art Benchmarks:
1.3CR Experiment with various elements of art to communicate meaning.
1.3PE Convey ideas and emotions using the elements of art.
1.3RE Explore and describe how works of art are produced.
