About this School Project (O'Keeffe Inspired Shells)
Second grade students were introduced to Georgia O’Keeffe, a famous American artist known for her colorful and big paintings of flowers and landscapes. She loved to show the beauty of nature in her art, making shapes and colors look really special. O'Keeffe is celebrated for being one of the first women to make a big mark in modern art, inspiring many people with her unique style!
We took inspiration from O’Keeffe’s painting “Red Hill and White Shell” for our spiral shell artwork. While making this artwork, students learned how to use the color wheel to help them make informed color choices for blending and mixing. Finding colors that are neighbors on the color wheel will help ensure a good mix and avoid muddy color combinations. Students enjoyed using oil pastels to color and using their fingers to blend the oil pastels to create a cool fading effect.
