About this School Project (4th Tim Burton)
In this project, students explored the unique and whimsical style of Tim Burton by creating their own imaginative portraits. Inspired by Burton's famous characters, known for their exaggerated features such as large eyes, long faces, and quirky expressions, students sketched creative portraits using pencil.
After completing their sketches, students added highlights using white charcoal pencils. They learned how to create light areas on their drawings—like on the forehead, nose, and cheeks—using blending sticks to smoothly blend the highlights into the rest of the face. This gave their portraits a more three-dimensional appearance.
Next, students added shadows using black charcoal pencils. They focused on shading areas like under the chin, around the eyes, and on the sides of the face, using blending sticks to soften the transitions between light and dark. This helped create depth and contrast, bringing their portraits to life in a dramatic way.
Through this project, students learned how to balance highlights and shadows to make their portraits look more realistic, while still capturing the playful, exaggerated style of Tim Burton. The result was a collection of fun, expressive, and slightly spooky portraits that reflected their creativity and growing skills in shading and blending.
