About this School Project (Animal Picturing Writing Paintings)
ARPS third graders participated in an exciting cross-curricular project called Picturing Writing. Developed by Beth Olshansky, these evidence-based models use quality picture books and simple, captivating art techniques to teach the art of writing. Immersed in a rigorous creative process during Artists/Writers Workshop, students create their own quality picture books aligned with grade-level standards and curriculum. They learn to read like a writer and see like an artist (taken from the PW website). ARPS students learned about visual research as well as several drawing and painting techniques using crayon resist and watercolor to create zoomed in artwork showing texture and other important details about their animals and their corresponding habitats, then took their paintings back to their classroom and completed descriptive writing based on their paintings.
