About this School Project (4 Southwest Landscapes)
We looked at landscape photography from the southwest United States for inspiration for this project. We talked about the contrast created by the warm colors (yellows, golds, oranges, reds and browns) of the rock formations with the blue skies in the background. Students were encouraged to show depth and space in their compositions by using horizon lines, overlapping and size changes. We talked about making an interesting and varied “skyline” versus just a straight horizon line. Students strove to draw balanced, interesting compositions. With scenes drawn in pencil, we used a piece of cardboard and black tempera paint to print over the lines, add boldness to the sketches. Once dry, we used oil crayons to fill our scenes with warm colors, and then used a wooden skewer and a technique called sgraffito to etch smaller lines, adding pattern and texture. Lastly, we used watercolor to paint in the skies, providing beautiful contrast.
