About this School Project (2nd Grade Pet Portraits)
The students learned about a contemporary artist from England, Phil Heckles, AKA Hercule Van Wolfwinkle, who draws people’s pets and donates the money made to local homeless shelters. He draws pets of all kinds (dogs, cats, birds, lizards, bunnies, etc) using a black ink pen and then colors them in with colored pencils. His style is very unique - he elongates and stretches out different parts of the animals, such as their legs, necks or tongues, and give them silly criss-cross eyes. He also eliminates the background and only focuses on the pet in a fun, cartoon style. I asked my friends and family to send in photos of their pets. Each student chose a photograph and tried to draw it in the style of Phil Heckles. When they were done, they glued their drawing next to the photograph of the pet they chose. We hope these make you laugh or smile!
