Artist Statement (what LOUISA642 said about their artwork)
Two animals I created were a human and a fish. I did this because the human I chose was wearing a bright orange suit with a blue shirt while sitting on an orange subway seat. And I was looking online at fish and a couple other animals, and the fish I chose spoke to me because of its big head, the orange color in it, and lastly because the personality of the fish’s head matched the person's body language.
The challenging part of the project was to add something special to it. I didn’t want it to be just a fish man, I wanted there to be more to it. Which is why, I added a box with a fish bowl in it to relate back to our first mini box project. It was tricky getting it to look like it belonged on the subway seat, and wasn’t copied and pasted there. I had to add shadow and explore new things I didn’t know about.
The easy part of the project was blending the fish and man together. Once I had each picture it was very easy to subtract from the man's mask and fill it in with the fish’s head. I also used the different opacities to blend the necks of the fish and man together to get it to look as realistic as possible, and that was surprisingly easy to do.
If I were to do the project again, I would work more on the shadows and get the hat to look more like it was sitting on the person's head. I think it would really help the image look better, so I wish I spent more time on it.
I like that my image has character to it. It’s not like looking at an image and being like “wow! That's a tiger and lion blended together!” The man's body sitting on the subway looks sad and lonely, and the fish gives a more positive tone to it. Because of the bright colors, it also adds a circus vibe to it which I love! This is a type of art I wouldn’t normally try, so I like how the image is a bit more funny and charming!
I think it was helpful to do more than one hybrid because it helped me see what type of patterns and textures looked best together, and what animals I liked blending and didn’t like blending. If I only did one, I wouldn’t be able to experiment and add different things like: using a human, blending more than one animal, and more.
